06. Papercraft Objects: Paper Template for Prototype

Image
My First Prototype Going through this process, I faced many challenges and was able to overcome a majority of them. However, it was when I got to the end that I faced the most adversity. For instance, I was sure how I would trim the tabs due to the numerical overlap that occurred. I also got lost on the final preparation stages, as I couldn't find the exact steps online for how to format and prepare the cutouts for printing.

05. Papercraft Objects: Digital Samples

Image
My Digital Samples So, for this part of the project, we had to develop 3D shapes to get us started on thinking about what we wanted our products to look like and getting acquainted with drawing the objects in Rhino first so that we could easily translate them into real life. This got me thinking about what I was going to create, as I do not have to only make an object that is close to me but also put it in the context of a lightbox while still having it look nice. This is a big part of why I have not come to a conclusion yet, but I was able to start thinking about how I could design the lightbox itself, as you will see throughout the screenshots. This was just kind of me practicing and trying out different shapes and objects to see how they would unfold and familiarize myself with the different functions. This was my first attempt at making something that resembled a lightbox, and I wanted to start with the basic shape first because it would help me understand what unfolding it wo...

04. Papercraft: Research

Image
Light Boxes For my papercraft choice, I decided to go with light boxes, and the artists shown in the article were Deepti Nair and Harikrishnan Panicker, also known as Hari & Deepti, whose work recently appeared at SCOPE New York through Black Book Gallery. The light boxes are made of cut paper, beginning with layers of precisely cut watercolor paper that are placed inside shadow boxes and illuminated by LED strips. Hari and Deepti enjoy having their light boxes tell a story by incorporating elements like stars, flames, and fireflies. What I found most interesting was their view of paper as "brutal in its simplicity as a medium" in the sense that paper is flexible in nature, especially in the hands of an artist, as it can be molded and shaped to create intricate shapes or illusions that go beyond what the eye can see. I have a couple of light boxes, so the concept isn't new to me, but it's also not something I've looked into extensively previously. Looking ove...

03. Mesh Mashup: Mesh Editing & HD Renders

Image
My Mesh Mashup Introduction:  This is a museum exhibit about a man who lived a solitary life for the majority of his life until falling in love in his later years. This allowed him to feel butterflies in his stomach, something he had never experienced before. This piece, fiction though it may be, demonstrates that an elderly man can feel so "youthful" These feelings then physically manifested themselves after he died. 02. Mesh Mashup: Concept Generation

Image
My Mesh Mashups Introduction: Introduction: From the beginning of the project, I knew it was going to be challenging as I was introduced to two concepts (remix culture and juxtaposition) I wasn't too familiar with before this project. After taking what I learned from class and doing some extra research, I was able to get a better understanding and therefore apply it to the project itself and what I wanted the theme to be. Remix culture involves the blending, repurposing, and reinterpretation of existing design elements to create new and innovative ideas and products. Knowing this, my mind started coming up with all sorts of ideas. However, I couldn't just have random objects put together, as that wouldn't fulfill the requirements for this assignment. I also learned about juxtaposition and how there have to be two or more objects that are placed side by side with the purpose of either highlighting the difference, creating effects that invoke emotion, or even just making po...

01. Objectified: Response

Image
Thoughts: So going into this video, I knew little about design and the process that professional designers go through to make the everyday objects we use. Going through the video, I saw different takes and approaches to the design process as well as the meaning of design itself. What I found really interesting about this is how different designers can have different personalities, beliefs, approaches, etc. while successfully creating essentially the same products. Of course, this does create variety, which is better in most ways for us as consumers, but I do often find myself being more conservative when buying things with greater importance (in other words, sticking to what works) and being more permissive and willing to try out new things when it comes to things that are not as important. This is what got me thinking about the importance of design when it comes to one's interaction with an object. Images: Description: Going through the video, I found that a lot of the objects wer...
